Scheduled to be opened in 2012, France is building the world's largest solar plant on a 1,025 acre abandoned NATO site in Toul-Rosieres, near the eastern city of Metz. It is reported that the site will produce enough power for a town of 62,000 people or 143 megawatts.
Imagine this! The French plant will be over double the size of the current largest solar power plant in Olmedilla in Spain, producing 60 megawatts.
Toul-Rosieres will quadruple nuclear-dependent France's photovoltaic power output, but still leave it far behind sunny Spain and Germany, which generate 1,671 MW and 1,505 MW respectively.
It is worth mentioning that both Australia and the United States are building photovoltaic plants that are larger than the one planned in France. It will be a race to see who has the first plant up and running.
